What Is It?
The spirit called deep sleep and slumber is part of the reason why many people of the world are so disillusioned. Yes, this is an actual spirit that exists! What is it’s function? How does it operate? The Holy Bible records about thirty (30) spirits (that I’m currently aware of), which are obvious enemies of born-again believers and enemies of faith in God. Over time we will discuss them on this blog. Let us examine the scriptures that describe the spirit called deep sleep and slumber.
This is the name of the spirit in the Old Testament. This spirit is often sent from or caused by God. The name is translated from the Hebrew word TARDEMAH תַּרְדֵּמָה (Strong’s H8639), and is pronounced tar·dā·mä’. According to Gesenius, it refers to “very great inertness”.
It is first seen in Genesis 2:21 where God “caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam” then operated on him to remove a rib to make woman. It “fell upon Abram” in Genesis 15:12 but Abram could still hear God’s instructions. It came “from the LORD” and “was fallen” upon Saul and his men in 1 Samuel 26:12, and “no man saw, nor knew, neither awaked” because it came upon them while they were sleeping. This tells us that it is a very real spirit and not regular sleep. In Proverbs 19:15, the scripture says slothfulness or laziness causes it to fall on people as well. This spirit also affects people who are wide awake and functioning in the world. It affected the children of Israel. In Isaiah 29 (KJV), it is written:
“7And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.
8It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.
9Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.
10For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.
11And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:
12And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.
13Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
14Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.”
In this scripture, Ariel is Israel, the lion of God. This prophetic scripture says God will pour out this spirit upon them and it will affect them as if they were in a dream. Imagine a hungry man dreaming about food then wakes up hungry still; or a thirsty man dreaming that he is drinking but wakes up thirsty still. Israel will look at things like they are reading a book but cannot understand it. This stupor is compared to a man who cannot read yet he is given a book to read. This spirit will cause the wisdom of their wise men to perish and it will hide understanding from their prudent men. Is this part of the reason why many of our Israeli brethren have not accepted the Messiah?
Please look forward to Spirit DEEP SLEEP and SLUMBER (part 2) where we will continue our discussion.
